Tension spread due to scuffle

On the afternoon of 16 August 1980, more than 70 thousand spectators gathered at the Stadium at Eden Gardens. Basu, the fiery right winger of Mohun Bagan, was dropped by Dilip Palit, side back of East Bengal. Dilip Palit was notorious for his aggressive tackling. According to the reports of that time, the referee of the match, the late Sudhin Chatterjee had no control over the match. Once when there was a scuffle in Basu and Dileep abroad, the tension spread to the stand. The audience on both sides started pelting stones.
